July 1962 High Altitude Nuclear Test
In July 1962 We were embarked as NROTC Midshipman for our third class cruise.
You could tell Kitty Hawk was not well built by the contractor shipyard because of old metal used in some of the decks.
We sailed from San Diego to Hawaii while the air group was qualifying the new F-4 Phantoms for carrier operations-- at least that was what we were told by the crew.
In early July she ran south toward Johnston Island so we could observe a high altitude Nuclear test. StarFish Prime I do believe.
The intial flash was not much, but then we heard the EMP pass over the ship-- (It was a high pitched sound) Then the whole sky in the middle of the pacific ocean at night turned green. (more than any northern light I have ever seen) gradually the colors changed to yellow then orange and finally it was all RED. If you read the accounts the EMP caused electrical problems in Hawaii. It also disrupted the long range communications in the Pacific for at least 6 weeks. I had Air Force friend that related years later that they were flying from Hickam to Guam that night and the sky colors scared them since they were not aware of the test. Also they lost long range communications. It was not long after that series of tests that the USA and USSR decided that atmospheric tests were NOT a good idea.
And so it was an interesting cruise for a young college student who is now retired from the Navy Reserve.
PS Have you ever read in the Holy Bible when the sky turns Blood Red --- well now you know why someday it will.
